Features information that is relevant to travellers who are thinking about and actively planning a visit to Mauritus.
A must see within Flic En Flac, and indeed within the Western Mauritius area is Casela Nature Park – there are some stunning views out to see, and the experience is supplemented by the outstanding variety of fauna and flora on display – there are numerous species of birds, and animals and you can take a traditional jeep-safari where you can see some of these creatures roaming about in their natural habitat.
If it appeals, you can also take a tour of the nearby Medine Sugar Factory nearby. It may sound dry but there’s a chance to taste some of the produce of the attached distillery at the end of the tour.

Theatre lovers can pop in to the Municipal Theatre which holds various plays and musical events.
Company Gardens has some wonderfully large banyan trees and is worth a visit – just do not be there past sunset as it transforms into a seedy red light district. It’s also ill advised for single ladies to be in this area by themselves.
Mauritius is a good example of a harmonious multi national society. There are some notable churches and Cathedrals to be seen – St Louis Cathedral and St James Cathedral are well worth a visit.
Some of the most breathtaking views of the city can be seen from the Citadel (Fort Adelaide).
Getting around Port Louis is best done by taxi. It’s not especially expensive to hire taxi’s, and it is a far better option than trying to drive yourself within the city (the traffic can be intense, and the driving of the Mauritius public isn’t exactly world class).

There’s a remarkably diverse range of scenery here – sugar canes and mountains meet picturesque harbour villages – there’s even waterfalls and forests to keep your camcorder more than busy.
There’s also a rather incredible wildlife reserve island on lle aux Aigrettes – it’s possible to book a boat to visit the island (tours are available – you can request more information from the resort you stay it to book).
Along the North/South border is Bambous Virieux, with a small population of under 3,000 – there really aren’t many places to stay here but it’s known for the Vieux Grand Port which some visitors to Mauritius decide to tour – the Frederik Hendrik Museum is here (admission is free) which showcases the Dutch influences of Mauritius.
There’s not too much in the way of developments, or even points of interests along the rest of Southern Mauritius – some of the destinations you’ll come over include Riviere des Anguilles, Souillac, Pointe aux Roches and Bel Ombre.

There are many artefacts and displays, many with a distinct sea flavour – such as Spanish coins rescued from a sunken wreck from the seventeenth century. Many tourists to Mauritius enjoy visiting the museum – other artefacts include pistols and weaponry, maps and paintings from various stages of Mauritius history and it’s different rulers. Well worth a look, happily the admission is free so it wont break the bank.
Also worth a quick look near to Mahebourg are the quaint Rault Biscuit Factory and Notre Dame Des Anges tower. Mahebourg is also your best chance for water sports along the south of Mauritius – holiday makers to south Mauritius tend to visit the Bluebay area which has several places to dive and snorkey – Coral Diving is the major business here for diving and you can find it at Le Preskil hotel at Pointe d’Esny. You can also enjoy glass bottomed boat trips, and day trips to nearby islands from this area.

For good oriental food pop in to Hong Kong Tower – really outstanding food and reasonably priced. Sakura is a Japanese restaurant which serves up a fair sushi. Also a popular choice is La Jonque.
If you’re in the mood for Italian, Luigi’s is a nice place to pop in to. Another option is Don Camillo.
There are many other options too – take your pick from La Capitaine (seafood place set superbly on the coast), Alchemy (steak) or Le Tandoor (Indian).
Within an easy taxi ride is Le Bateau d’Ivre which is just before Pointe aux cannoniers. You can also get a taxi to Trou Aux Biches (about five minutes) and dine at the restaurants there.
Good cheap Chinese food is available at China Garden while Café Muller is a nice place to stop off for lunch (situated in a wonderful garden area and dishes are incredibly good value).
Other Points Of Interest In Grand Baie
There are some good nightime options for tourists within Grand Bair. For a start there are a couple of disco’s two of the most popular being Star Dance and El Diablo.
There are also many café’s and bars – Banana Café is one of the most popular, and there are many others too – Sunset Café (which boasts some spectacular sea views and has desert portion sizes that even two people would struggle to finish), Funky Monkey and Keg & Marlin to name but a few.
