Port Louis
Port Louis is the capital city and main port of Mauritius. It is also the largest city in Mauritius. Port Louis was constructed in the year 1735 by the noted French governor, Mahe de Labourdonnais.
The Port is named in honour of King Louis XV.
Port Louis is surrounded by a mountain range, called the Port Louis Moka Range. Mauritius Capital Port Louis has conserved many historic and colonial buildings through the years. One of them is a fortification named Fort Adelaide or La Citadelle, built by the British in 1835.
The main tourist attractions in Port Louis include the Caudan Waterfront, Port Louis Bazaar, Police Barracks, the Mauritian Chinatown and the old Port Louis theatre.
There are three museums: the Blue Penny Museum, the Mauritius Natural History Museum and the Mauritius Stamp Museum.
The economy of the city is dominated by its financial centre, port facilities, tourism and the manufacturing sector which include textiles, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Port Louis has the biggest port facility in the Indian Ocean region and one of Africa’s major financial centres.

The Curious Corner of Chamarel is a house filled with a variety of delusional fantasies. There are 40 exhibits set over the 5,000sq meters. These exhibits will continually challenge your brain until you finish your tour in one-and-a-half hour.
Mirror Maze is a room full of mazes surrounded by some 200 mirrors showing infinite reflections, impossible corridors and mind-bending light effects to enable you to find your way out of the maze.

Central Mauritius
The Central Mauritius region is known for two major areas – the Black River Gorges (National Park) and Curepipe.
There are other villages spread throughout the centre but the above two tend to be the major destination for tourists on holiday to Mauritius.
The National Park allows for a good deal of hiking and there are some splendid mountain scenes to be taken in here – and the National Park is within relatively easy reach from most areas of Mauritius.
Black River Gorges (National Park)
This very unique region of Mauritius has some incredible mountains, spectacular scenery including gushing waterfalls, and represents great opportunities for hiking and nature lovers.
A scenic drive is very much recommended within the National Park and you can go on an organised tour, or even hire a car to take you for the day. The resort you stay at should tell you how you can book a car or excursion to visit.
There’s a tourist information centre available for holiday makers who wish to explore the Park further, and go on for hikes.
